We have made many leaps and bounds towards a healthier future, mostly in part due to scientific research, immediate international cooperation, and the proper allocation of resources. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention has tracked and confirmed the eradication of worldwide diseases such as smallpox. This also includes the reduction in prevalence for diseases such as measles through aggressive immunization campaigns. We have come to address the problem of the cholera outbreak by calling all UN member countries to aid in increasing the distribution of cholera vaccines as well as improving river and water sanitation in Haiti.

In a perfect world, the collective efforts of all countries formatted in a “Habitat for Humanity” style project would be enough to repair the roads, plumbing, housing, and many other aspects of Haitian infrastructure that were damaged by the horrific earthquake. However, most people are aware that this is not financially possible or practical. Current research supports the use of oral cholera vaccines (OCV) as a widespread defense against the spread of cholera. Haitian mothers can protect their children from cholera, potentially decreasing child mortality rates by having access to these life saving vaccines!
Are cholera vaccines effective? A study conducted by Matias et al. in 2016 found that the current cholera vaccine does indeed induce antibody secreting cell responses in adults. However, the addition of a second follow up vaccine dose did not cause any further increase in immune response. This suggests that vaccines are an effective protective factor against cholera; however, the vaccination schedule should be further researched and altered according to the findings.
