Choices In Shakespeare's Romeo And Juliet

“These violet delights have violet ends, […] Therefore, love moderately; long love doth so; Too swift arrives as tardy as too slow.” In this scene, Friar Lawrence addresses Romeo’s new love, and advises him to love moderately and think wisely before giving into his temptations. But even with Friar’s advice, Romeo stops at nothing for his beloved Juliet. Romeo’s decisions and precipitous attitude along with the decisions of many other characters contributes to the consequences which many of the characters suffer from. The tragic events which started with the death of Tybalt and Mercutio are indirect consequences of their reckless decisions. The choices characters made were rash, sudden and were made based on their emotions. The death of the characters could have been easily avoided by making the right choices. Every choice made in the play created a chain reaction of events that lead to the infamous tragic ending. His love over Rosaline and the emotions he displays after he is rejected by her already displays the destructive, passionate behavior that Romeo has towards love. His second mistake was going to the Capulet ball, although it is believed it was fate that the Capulet servant had invited him over without the knowledge of him being a Montague, Romeo still held the choice of attending the ball or not. His third mistake was pursuing the love he and Juliet had, both Juliet and Romeo were aware that their family’s feud was a barrier, but they continue on with their love hoping it would end happily.
