I, Kristyn Thomas used the Euromonitor database to conduct the research in the chocolate confectionery category for both the United States and Germany. I researched the current trends of the chocolate confectionery, identified who the competitors are, what makes consumers to appeal to a certain product, and where the chocolate confectionery companies are positioned in the market.
According to the analysis in Euromonitor, Chocolate Confectionery in Germany (2016) has found that different trends have a different effect in each country. Germany has experienced a high increase to raw materials due to the weather conditions. The materials that have increased in price include cocoa, almonds, hazelnut, and sugar. It grew from 399.43 million Euros in 2015 to 441.37 million Euros in 2016. The current value grew 10% for chocolate being sold in pouches or bags. The reason for the success in sales is due to consumers preferring to have the packaging where it is easier to snack in. The snack sized packaging also increased sales for major sporting events such as the European Football Championship and the Rio Olympics. The research conducted by Chocolate Confectionery in Germany (2016) has found that seasonal chocolate has experienced a decline in sales in 2016. Seasonal chocolate has had a three year successful streak, however, this year was a shorter Easter business period which caused the sales to decline. The US had an increased sales value of 7% for seasonal chocolate in 2016. The chocolate market in Germany has done very well with small pouches or bags according to Chocolate Confectionery in Germany (2016). However, chocolate being sold in boxes for the US has increased sales by 5% according to Chocolate Confectionery in US (2016). The reason for the success of box assortments is because Grand Ferrero Roche product earned the National Confectioners Association’s award for most innovative product. They were followed by Godiva Chocolatier and See’s Candies. In addition, box assortments is a common gift to many consumers. According to Chocolate Confectionery in US (2016), Hershey Co and Mars Inc are the most successful in their chocolate category as of 2016. Both of these companies have a combined 64% market share.
