The main character, Jose, has a grandmother called M' an Tine. Jose and his friends deice that one day they want to go to the store and get some alcohol. He goes in and tell the store owner that its for his grandmother. The owner believes him and lets Jose buy the alcohol. Jose and his friends decide to get drunk and start playing around. They end up playing with fire and set the sugar cane fields on fire. This is a horrible situation to be in. Now the owners of the field lose their crops and someone is to blame. This puts workers like M' an Tine in an awful position. M' an Tine is a hard working good citizen. She work hard everyday in the fields just to Jose does not have to. She does not want him to end up like her, and this is how he treats her. M' an Tine is in the fields everyday and it begins to take a toll on her body. Jose ends up getting a scholarship to go to school and once again M' an Tine supports him and goes there with him. At the end of the film we find out the M' an Tine dies from a heart attack. This is due to all of her service in the fields. Regardless of her ending she endured both the scars that her grandson gave her and the good times they shared
