People think of Knights as men who rode on horseback in shiny armor, but really there is a whole bunch more to them then just the glorified details we all know. They had to train, follow a code, and fight for things that they didn’t necessarily believe in. Sometimes, the knights fought just so the Lord or King would give them land or gold so they will be of nobility class. If you were a higher standard in the social class, sometimes the kids would be able to become a knight in training, there were a few stages to this such as, being a Page, then a Squire, and then a Knight.…

In the film William was able to change his social standings from being a low class peasant to be a noble knight. Throughout the entirety of the Canterbury Tales there was not a single character who was able to change their social class. This leads me to believe that during the medieval era people were unable to change their social class. Although during this time it was known that peasants would give their children to knights, but they were only able to become squires, that is still a position of servitude. In the medieval era William would not have been able to become a knight even if he did joust against Prince Edward.…

Imagine having the opportunity to be the judge of 24 stories and having to pick the very best one. In Chaucer's, The Canterbury Tales, there are 29 pilgrimes in which they are making a pilgrimage to Canterbury. Each pilgrim is to tell at least a tale to and from Canterbury, resulting in 120 tales in which Chaucer was only able to record 24 tales. Within the telling of these stories, there is a contest in which the pilgrim, the Host, chooses the best Tale. In selecting the winning tale the story must meet the criteria of being morally sound as well as entertaining to the Host and the rest of the pilgrims.…

From the very first sentence, the narrator gives an incredibly straightforward characterization, saying “A KNIGHT there was, and that a worthy man” (Chaucer 43). What’s more, he gives additional admirations with surprising repetition of the term “worthy” bound up with his martial skill and experience. Chaucer further credits the Knight, this time about his insight and behavior. He says, “And although he was brave, he was prudent, and of his deportment as meek as is a maid” (Chaucer 68-9). The Knight is not a mere ignoble, amoral barbarian but a man of virtue, demonstrating a maiden-like meekness.…
