Chivalry: Dead In The Nineteenth Century

Chivalry is the medieval knightly system that includes religious, moral, and social codes. In the eleventh and twelfth century, chivalry included the qualities that were expected of an ideal knight. Specifically, these qualities include courage, honor, courtesy, and justice. Although chivalry is considered dead in the twenty-first century, it should be resurrected. In modern times, the most similar system to chivalry consists of the series of acts committed by men that are courteous toward women. These actions are essential to a man acting like a true gentleman, but a majority of men do not take the time to learn these simple gestures. Although some men have appropriate manners and are courteous to women, if a man wants to be viewed as a gentleman, he must learn a more modern code of chivalry to adhere to. In order to gain a woman’s respect and appreciation, there are multiple codes that a man should follow. These codes include manners, social skills, and behavioral skills. Manners are simple; they exhibit the politeness and the etiquette of a person. For example, manners include the following: using “please” and “thank you”, holding the door open for someone, and not talking with a mouth full of food. Social skills commonly include: the use of strong eye contact during a conversation, a firm handshake, and listening well to others. Behavioral skills consist of being respectful of other people and their belongings, communicating well with others, and using a sense of morality and purpose when making a decision. If all men were respectful, polite, and attentive to women, then chivalry would not have fully deceased. Although chivalry will not be completely resurrected, it will be slightly altered in order to fit the modern lifestyle of men in the twenty-first
