Steve Ells is the founder of Chipotle Mexican Grill, Inc. Ells was born September 12, 1965, in Indiana, and in 1988 he Graduated with an Art History degree from the University of Colorado at Boulder. He then found an interest in cooking, which motivated him to attend the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, New York. As described in the article of International Directory of Company Histories "After graduating in 1990, he worked for two years at the high-end Stars restaurant in San Francisco under the famed chef Jeremiah Tower. His inspiration for creating Chipotle." After many years of planning and organizing his business, he persuaded his father who was the current president of the pharmaceuticals firm Syntex Corporation at that time to invest a decent amount of money to open the first Chipotle Mexican Grill, in Denver area, Colorado where he grew up. On July 1993, the first Chipotle restaurant was founded. During the rough beginning of the restaurant, Ells developed an open kitchen design that permitted their customers to have any interactions with the staff and personal view of the food they were ordering.
The article of International Directory of Company Histories described that "Chipotle began with a simple philosophy. Demonstrate that food served fast doesn 't have to be a traditional fast-food experience."
