In the late 1800s, there was major conflict between the Americans, the Indians, and the Chinese. To the Americans, the Indians and the Chinese were like an alien species. They were different from them, and because of this were treated differently. Sometimes, this involved violence and even death. It was because they were different compared to the white man that they were treated like dirt under a rug.
The Indians were basically almost American, only they were seen as savages. The americans had no desire to actually kill them, but instead kill the savage that was buried deep inside their souls. “Kill the Indian in him, and save the man,” (Pratt 37). So, they did not want to rid the world of the Indians physically, but mentally.
