Real Chinese Spring Festival In America

The family holiday that I am going to write about is the spring festival, which means new year. I love it because it is the time that the whole family get together and celebrate the new year. However, there are a lot of the misunderstanding that Americans have about the Chinese spring festival. A lot of Americans think that during the spring festival we would do the Feng Shui forecast, which means predicting you future. Also, Americans think we would do the dragon dance on the streets during the spring festival(Valdez). Yes, we did have this tradition, but we do not do it a lot now. It is more like a symbol for it, we only do it for some TV shows now. Just like I did not know anything about Christmas before I come to America, People here have …show more content…
First, I am going to tell the history of spring festival. There is a story about it. In ancient China, there is monster called “Nian,” it lived in the ocean. Every last day of a year, it would come out of the ocean and break into people’s house to eat people and their livestock. So in the end of every year, people would get together and run away from their home to hide in mountain. One year when people were ready to leave, an old man came to their village and told them that they did need to be afraid of “Nian,” Then he stayed in the village and hid in a house. When “Nian” came, he opened the door and set off firecrackers. “Nian” just froze, then the old man changed his cloth to red color, “Nian” saw it and run away. People realized that “Nian” was afraid of sound and red color, so their play firecrackers and wear red cloth during those time of the year. It became a tradition and we call it “Guo Nian”, which means celebrating the new …show more content…
Before the spring festival, every family will put the word “Fu” which means luck, upside down on their door. The pronunciation of “upside down” in Chinese sounds like “arrived”, so it means the luck has arrived. Also, we will put the pictures of door-god on our door. In ancient China, there is the place called “Ghostdom,” the ghosts always get out at night and hurt people, so the door god will will guard the door to keep the ghosts out. For bring us good luck, we will clean the whole house, and dump the dust out. “Dust” in Chinese sounds like “old”, so it means we dumped our old bad luck out and welcome the good luck to our
