The family holiday that I am going to write about is the spring festival, which means new year. I love it because it is the time that the whole family get together and celebrate the new year. However, there are a lot of the misunderstanding that Americans have about the Chinese spring festival. A lot of Americans think that during the spring festival we would do the Feng Shui forecast, which means predicting you future. Also, Americans think we would do the dragon dance on the streets during the spring festival(Valdez). Yes, we did have this tradition, but we do not do it a lot now. First, I am going to tell the history of spring festival. There is a story about it. In ancient China, there is monster called “Nian,” it lived in the ocean. Every last day of a year, it would come out of the ocean and break into people’s house to eat people and their livestock. So in the end of every year, people would get together and run away from their home to hide in mountain. One year when people were ready to leave, an old man came to their village and told them that they did need to be afraid of “Nian,” Then he stayed in the village and hid in a house. When “Nian” came, he opened the door and set off firecrackers. “Nian” just froze, then the old man changed his cloth to red color, “Nian” saw it and run away. People realized that “Nian” was afraid of sound and red color, so their play firecrackers and wear red cloth during those time of the year.
