During Lunar New Year, I had a chance to attend a Chinese festival in Monterey Park. I am Vietnamese, so I have celebrated Lunar New Year by coming to Vietnamese New Year festivals every year with my family. However, this year, my friends invited me to come to a Chinese New Year festival, and it was really an interesting experience. City of Monterey Park and World Journal LA were the hosts in the festival. Every Vietnamese New Year and Chinese New Year starts a new animal’s zodiac year. The animal zodiac is a repeating cycle of twelve years; each year is represented by an animal. However, the main difference between Chinese New Year and Vietnam New Year is Chinese calendar has some different animals comparing to Vietnamese calendar. In order, the twelve animals in Chinese calendar are rat, ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, goat, monkey, rooster, dog, and pig. Vietnamese lunar calendar replaces the Ox, Rabbit, and Sheep in the Chinese calendar with the Buffalo, Cat, and Goat. During Chinese New Year, the main cuisine dumplings. My friends told me Chinese people like to eat dumplings in Lunar New Year because the shape of dumplings represents a kind of money that Chinese people used to use in ancient time. Eating dumplings also mean bring wealth to their house. In addition, Chinese people also wrap different fillings, such as candy and peanuts, to express different willings in the coming year. Because of different fillings, Chinese dumplings can be savoury or sweet.…
