The stories describe a certain event that the person had to go through, mother or daughter. By the way its told, the reader can understand that the mothers have gone through so much but the daughters never knew about it. Instead they saw them as whiny old ladies that didn’t understand the new youth. An example of this would be with the characters Waverly Jong and Lindo Jong. Lindo Jong is the Chinese mother who immigrated to the United States, running away from her past, a past that her daughter never knew or understood. Waverly Jong tells her view point of growing up in chapter 5, Rules of the Game. She was a brilliant girl with the skills of playing chess and going to the nationals, not losing one game. Of course the mother was proud of her, feeling a slight of relief that she will grow up to something big and self supporting. That was the whole reason in coming to America, to start a new beginning that will not harm your future. She kept describing and talking about a breeze, like she wanted to be one. Like the air, she wanted to flow away and be free from a positions she did not wish to be in. A position that she had to stay because of her families beliefs and promises. She must of acted as the breeze, and helped it blow off her husband’s side of the candle, also known as personification. Lindo Jongs life was chosen by others people that did not care for her feeling, and the daughter will not understand that. And she will neither know that the mother wants her to cherish a freedom that she had sacrifice herself in order to get it.
