Chinese students are well-known for their straight As, diligence, and well known as “human calculators”. Every day, Chinese students face tons of exams and countless amounts of worksheets. If reader walked and observed streets on city centers in China at 6:00 in the afternoon, hundreds of kids will be spotted carrying their heavy backpacks with at least ten textbooks within, walking home directly from school. With tons of assignments, kids have no choice but to go home as soon as possible, and start studying immediately. They have no time for chore, relaxation, hobbies, or sports. Another intolerable fact is that Chinese students cannot enjoy holidays. In the schools in the U.S, a holiday means a holiday. It is the time for students to enjoy, play outdoors, and sign up for summer classes that they enjoy. However, in Chinese public schools, holidays are accompanied with two thick workbooks, six practice tests for each subject, and countless summer extend learning programs that equip students with a deeper understanding in algebra, geometry, physics, or other subjects in school. On the contrary, instead of teaching students to brainstorm and explain on their own, these programs trained kids to recite standard answers and even standard ways of writing an essay while they might not even understand the material. They seem to assume that the diploma of a great college can guarantee the success of their kids’ lives. They believe that by getting into a good preschool, their kids will be able to get into a good elementary school, then a good middle school, then a good high-school, which leads to a great college. A great college then leads to a great job, and a great job means a good income and good income equals money as a result, brings happiness. For this purpose, students have lost their childhood preparing for the college entrance exam and boosting their GPA. In other words, to parents, test grades decide the happiness of their kids. An assumption like this caused parents to put the grades of their kids at first in life. Comfort is no longer the first thing adults consider when they decide if they want to purchase a house, the school in that community is. Countless families moved out of the houses they purchased and moved to the community with the best school. Families circle their lives around the grades of their kids and build their entire lives upon the future of their kids. As a result, an assumption like this caused kids to lose their imagination and their unique personality because it deprived time for kids to develop their hobbies by forcing them to study all day
