China has been based on a patriarchal social system, within this man held the primary power. They were the heads of households and the ones who made the important decisions around the household. Women within China were often classed as less worthy as men; as a result they were many times subject to large amounts of slavery (Dougherty, 2006, p.6). Suiming (1999) concluded that women within China were divided into the following sections: wives, concubines, servants (slaves), nuns and whores (as cited in Dougherty 2006, p.5). The women who would take part in prostitution and the sex work would be the “whores” in the fifth class. China became liberated, as a result it lost its power, it became victim of communism. In this situation this occurrence was positively benefitting China, when it came to sex work its legitimacy and the criminal element surrounding it. In 1951 the Communist Party banned prostitution in Shanghai, and in 1958 it was abolished (Dougherty, 2006, p.14). China had created the Women’s Labor Training Institute (Henriot, 1957), in this controlled environment they rebuilt and reeducated these sex workers (as cited in Dougherty, 2006, p. 14). Specifically, they had to through medical exams, training for work within society and lastly, they underwent group therapy sessions (p.14). These group sessions allowed the ex- sex workers to realize how bad there past situations truly were. They weren’t allowed to leave this institute until they were labeled fit for current society. As for the successes rate for this program many of the women in this program despised it (p.14). Reason being, because they were drug addicted and this institute didn’t have a detox program available; as a result it made it difficult for the women to withstand the conditions that were opposed upon them (p.14). Prostitutes and sex workers were usually released within two to three years of being in this program
