Article 7 in the UDHR states that people are entitled to be equally protected under a country’s law (Nations, 1948). Although that people should be equally protected without discrimination by their government, a professor has a five year jail sentence for participating in consensual sexual activity (Ruan, 1988). This violates Article 7 because the professor was discriminated against because of his sexual orientation. If the professor was in a consensual heterosexual sexual activity, he would not have been arrested or sentenced. In 1980, Operation Rockcorry was initiated against the homosexual population (Chan, 2008). This operation caused hundreds of people to take a stand for equal rights for the homosexual community. This operation violated the right to be equally protected because the country attacked a specific group. An Equal Opportunity Bill was introduced but was denied because the government did not agree with the law (Peterson, 1997). In the UDHR, Article 3 states that all people should have security of person (Nations, 1948). Until 1988, the government was allowed to arrest people because they consented to having homosexual sexual activity. (Ruan, 1988). This does not allow people to be secure in the activities they take part in. Article 3 is an important human right because it allows people to have the right to privacy and the right to safety. Until 20012, the Chinese Psychiatric Association stated that being homosexual is a mental illness (Wendling, 2015). This is a violation of human rights because the government is stating that a natural way of life is an illness that does not allow people to be secure and safe with who they identify as. Children in the family have more pressure put on them because the parents fear they will not have grandchildren (Ruan, 1988). Because of the pressure that family puts on their children, people who identify as homosexual do not feel safe being who they are. Everyone should have the right to security of person, though many such as the gay community in China do
