Summary of: Chimpanzees Would Cook if Given the Chance, Research Says. By James Gorman

According to scientists from Harvard and Yale universities, chimpanzees have the mental capabilities required for cooking. That may seem unimpressive, but according to the scientists it is hard for chimps and other primates to give up food that is already in hand. However, the chimps proved to have impressive self control around raw food once they knew it had the possibility to become cooked. In a hypothesis proposed by Richard Wrangham humans may have started cooking things around 2 million years ago when we were only slightly more advanced than chimps. One major hindrance that has stopped cognitive scientists Felix Warneken and Alexandra G.

The chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes) and the bonobo (Pan paniscus) are the two closest living relatives of humans. While, bonobos and chimpanzees are very similar to each other, they also differ in many significant ways. However, in some ways they resemble more closely to humans than to each other. For example, chimpanzee males are much more aggressive and violent, especially when competing for a mate or a rank within the group. This violence can be lethal.…

Essay-2 CHALLENGE FROM MARGINAL CASES Having gone through the ‘Challenge from Marginal Cases: in the Article “Puppies, Pigs and People”, it seems the author Alastair Norcross is of the view that any mutilation or torture to non-human animals is morally impermissible irrespective of the actions of Fred’s behavior and torture of the animals or slaughtering or mutilation of farmed animals. He argues that there is no difference as the animal is mutilated in either case. In one case Fred tortures his puppies directly to obtain cocoamone for his pleasure whereas in other case farmed animals are slaughtered to cater the need of the people. From the above I feel, Fred is a rare consumer of cocoamone and the way he treats or torture puppies himself in an unorganized way and keep animal…

Some of the more important ones are the influence of food on inter-birth interval, the avoidance of starvation by Homo sapiens ancestors, our ancestors’ loss of body hair, and the influence of Darwinian selection for social tolerance and cooperation. When families go to SeaWorld they are surrounded by sea creatures; some of the main attractions include dolphin shows and sensational performances of the Killer Whales. Audiences view the shows and enjoy tricks that trainers and animals perform. However, they can be dangerous but can still have a playful personality with a lot of intelligence (Kirby, 3). Unfortunately, these large animals are in tanks that keep them restricted from returning to the ocean, thus placing themselves and their trainers in danger. Orcas have been known for attacking their trainers, like Dawn Brancheau in 2010.…

“Describe some research studies which have addressed the issue of whether non-human animals have a “theory of mind ', and explain what these studies have allowed psychologists to conclude in answer to the issue.” Chimpanzees are humans closest relatives and therefore are a good animal to study when attempting to assess whether non human animals have a theory of mind. This essay will attempt to first define what is meant by theory of mind, then will look at three studies and their approaches to researching theory of mind in non- human animals. It will briefly summarise, in turn, what each study attempted to achieve, how the study was conducted, and the subsequent finding of each study, specifically looking at areas of theory of mind which relate to chimps ' understanding of human problem solving and visual perception in both humans and other chimpanzees. “Theory of mind” refers to the way in which people understand other humans as thinking beings.…

To this point only humans were believed to possess material culture. Now chimps were not only using a tool but teaching their young how to do so. The fact that this is a learned behavior and not simply instinct is seen in that only certain groups in specific areas use this method. Chimps in other parts of Africa do not demonstrate this ability. Other groups of chimps employ rocks to crack open nuts while groups elsewhere use sharpened sticks to hunt prey (Primates).…
