Listening to diversified stories is important in order to create a realistic view on any topic. Chimamanda Adichie, a young writer from Eastern Nigeria, highlights one of the main reasons behind stereotypes in her speech “The Danger of Single Stories”. She gives a powerful explanation, with examples, of the affects a single story can have. As she says, “The single story creates stereotypes, and the problem with stereotypes is not that they are untrue, but that they are incomplete.” It is necessary to tell diversified stories to create “a balance of stories” and it’s our job to listen to them and then judge in order to create a sense of global community.
Single stories give people only one view point of a certain issue and limits a person’s knowledge on that certain issue. This creates stereotypes. One of the many controversial issues of today’s world is China’s dog festival. Almost every story shows the brutality done on dogs because of this festival and the negative effects of this festival. Upon searching up this issue, all the websites described how inhumane this festival is. This creates a negative image in the reader’s mind, because it only gives him/her one viewpoint on the issue. Most people would consider Chinese people to be ignorant because of this issue. Considering Chinese people uncaring is the result of listening to only one story on the issue. Upon researching deep into the topic, it can be found that a large portion of the population of China is against this festival. So it is important to look at more than one story. It is in the good of people as people would then look at everybody in positive manner and create a sense of global
