Chumamanda Adichie, the author of this Tedtalk gave an example of an experience she encountered with a college roommate. Her roommate had a deep seeded stereotype of Africans and was surprised to learn that Chumamanda spoke English very well because her home country of Nigeria spoke it as one of their official languages, listened to music from artists such as Mariah Carey, and new how to use a stove. Her single story view of Chumamanda kept her from seeing her in an accurate light. This view is not unique to Africans, but the author has had most of her experiences from that perspective.
