People can easily become obsessed with TV shows, movies, athletes, and books, drugs, really anything. However, letting something consume oneself hardly ever turns out well. One does not know he is being consumed by something until it is too late. In Nathaniel Hawthorne’s The Scarlet Letter some characters become obsessed with punishment, concealment, and revenge. Revenge made Roger Chillingworth lose his sanity and eventually cost him his life. Revenge will consume someone. Revenge is an evil thing that can make even a good person bad. Revenge is Chillingworth’s drug. Chillingworth was not a “good person” to begin with, but he was not completely bad. Then he wanted revenge on Dimmesdale.
