The imbalance of children’s toys is terrible, the toys show very little diversity. The bias of these toys is that they only perpetuate the perspective of white, heteronormative gender roles for both boys and girls toys. Recently there has been some representation of minorities, but even that is limited. Only until this year did Barbie make an Asian doll. The toys today still do not show any imperfections of attractiveness or disabilities. Children have a severe lack of knowledge of diversity such as transgender individuals, people with disabilities, and you would never see a Barbie who is ‘overweight.’ The psychoanalytic theory describes how children identify with their toys and they try to modify themselves to fit this characteristic. Children may be limited by their life choices due to the gender socialization in Western culture. Children may feel the need to pick careers that fit in the stereotypical male or female role, because we have a linguistic bias making men more seen in careers. Boys’ toys would influence them to take a masculine role that is determined by our society such as a fireman or police officer. Girls’ toys socialize them to take a nurturing role as a mother or a baker. The strong influence of nurturing baby dolls in girls’ toys denies them the option to other careers. They are constantly being told that being a mother is the best job, but are dismissed from legitimate careers because it’s considered to be out of their gender
