Depending on the child 's case, it depends on how long tIt takes, averagely, about 1 year to adopt a child in the United States, the most time children had to wait to be adopted is 3 years, about 32% children wait this long. Children can also be put in an orphanage when they lose their parents or guardian and they don 't have other family member to care for them. They would have to go through a process that takes them through to becoming involved in the system for adoption. The average age to adopt an orphan is 21 years old. In some states it is possible for non United States citizens but still are permanent legal residents to adopt a child and/or an infant.
