Just recently was nephew was placed on an autism spectrum. Throughout his life he always presented with different qualities. He would break out crying, falling out, and throwing things. When he turned three we took him and got him examined, and told us he was on the spectrum for autism. My love for a special needs child grew much fonder. There is a plan and a purpose, a value to every life, no matter what its location, age, gender or disability (Sharron Angle, n.d). My sister had a very hard time accepting him being autistic. She didn’t know how to deal with the screaming, crying, falling out because his brother didn’t have those qualities. I would simply hold him tight, and talk instead of screaming at him. We took him to the doctors and changed his eating diet and saw a major change. Children with special needs and their eating is a major impact on their behavior. The taste of food, the texture, oral sensory, and their appetite has a lot to do with their controlling behaviors. Often children that demonstrate with special needs don’t know why there upset, crying, and screaming it just is happening. They want friends to play with, they want to be respected, and the really want to feel included just like any other child. Children that possess with special needs is truly a vulnerable underserved population. There is not enough information on nutrition for parents with special needs children.
