Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder Essay
The children were observed within their classroom for two hours within three different days. The researcher observed that children with autism spectrum disorder spent the majority of their time unengaged, and spent less time in using their imagination to play with others, symbolic play, and sharing experience with another, joint attention. The researchers notice that the teachers were not focusing on how to directly instruct the students in how to engage with symbolic play and joint attention(Wong & Kasari, 2012).
The participants for this study was 55 preschoolers, which was a mixed group of children with autism spectrum disorder and children with other disabilities like Down syndrome, cerebral palsy, ADHD, and emotional/ behavioral disorder. The children ranged in age from 3 to 5 years old, and the mental age scores between 18.5 months to 4 years and 11 months old. The preschoolers were mostly boys(Wong & Kasari, 2012).
