Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder are some of the most diverse children classified under one category in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual and the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act. Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder experience “persistent deficits in social communication and social interaction across contexts.” (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders: DSM-5, 2013) Despite this commonality, children with Autism may experience a variety of symptoms within their disorder. Some of these symptoms include deficits in communication, developing relationships, maintaining eye contact, repetitive motions, speech, or routines, and strong reactions to sensory stimulation. There are several ways to diagnose Autism Spectrum Disorder including, but not limited to rating scales, interviews, and observation schedules.
I chose this specific topic because, “Intensive behavioral intervention for young children diagnosed with autism can produce large gains in social, cognitive, and language development.” (Macdonald, Parry-Cruwys, Dupere, & Ahearn, 2014) Children with Autism require a number of resources and interventions in order to develop behavioral, emotional, social, and academic skills. Often, the most immediate intervention that is done for children with Autism is social skills intervention which is helpful but behavior intervention can provide social skills help alongside many other benefits for children with Autism.
