I would diagnose this child with attention deficient hyperactive disorder, ADHD. It seems apparent that the child has both parts, since not only do they lose things constantly and struggle with listening (ADD), they are always on the move (HD). I also came to this conclusion since the child can focus on things they chose/want to. Having a hard time making friends is also another symptom that this kid exhibits. As far as treatment goes, most doctors would recommend medication right away. Although this is an option and I would let the family know about medications, I would tell them that this is not necessary at all, especially given their financial situations. A token economy would be used, which is constant reinforcements when the child displays a behavior or action you wanted done and reward systems. I would also make sure the parents were well aware of what ADHD is, as well as their teacher, stressing that in order for treatment to be effective, both need to be on board. It is good to let the mother know that her child is going to need a little extra attention, especially when she asked them to do things, and many pre-instructions will need to be given. The dad also needs to make sure he is on board, even if he is not around a lot. As far as society goes, we need make better jobs accessible to people of all races. It is apparent that this family is living right on the edge of poverty, even when the dad is working two jobs. If we could make sure everyone had access to the same jobs, the dad and mother could be around more, and have more time to fully address the behaviors of their child. (Lecture)
