Children Should NOT Be Banned Books

Between 1990 and 2000, there were 6,364 attempts to remove or restrict materials. (1) Around 60% of these attempts were from parents, 15% were from patrons of libraries, and only 9% were by administration. People wanted these materials removed for reasons such as “sexually explicit material”, “graphic language”, material that was “unsuited to age group”, “occult themes or promoting the occult or Satanism”, “violence”, “a homosexual theme or promoted homosexuality”, “promoting a religious viewpoint”, and “nudity”. Some books are banned for valid reasons, such as handling topics indelicately or being too forward in discussing certain topics. Parents can keep their children from reading certain books if they do not want them to, but it is unjust to others to ban the books entirely. Books cover important topics and themes and are often banned by parents because they disagree with how the books handled the topics. Some banned books are banned because they talked about the topics at all. However, parents can simply not let their children read the books without taking the books away from all other students. Even if a book covers topics that people don’t often want to talk about, the information is important and can influence how students view the world. Banned books can teach students truths about the world and prepare them for real life. Books teach us the horrible truths about certain topics and inform us on things work in the world. So, books should never be banned because of the information they present because that information could be the only education on a topic that a student will ever
