Children Should Be Required To Be Successful

According to the National Education Association, the National Assessment of Educational Progress tested children nationwide for reading skills. The results for reading tests for fourth-grade students were: Below the most basic level 38 percent; Proficient 31 percent, and Advanced 7 percent. These unacceptable scores are raising questions if children are reading enough, and according to the National Education Association, having kids read more is one of the crucial components of becoming a good reader. I think children should be required to read more because reading expands a child's vocabulary, reading skills relate directly to academic success, and reading enhances a child's imagination. When students read more, they are taking in new information that can help them throughout all subjects, as reading can help increase focus. For instance, the article 10 Reasons Why People Who Read A Lot Are More Likely To Be Successful states that “Readers take breaks, naturally, but the most avid reader simply cannot put a book down for longer than a day after they’ve dove into it.” People who read more have exceptional focusing skills, as they tend to focus a lot while reading. Children who continue to read throughout their life tend to be more successful in professional success too. For example, the article Reading - The Hidden Success Factor states that “For those who read actively and enthusiastically, for those who are hungry to learn, every road branches into new possibilities, and their adaptability and broad range of knowledge will allow them to exit at any time and simply choose another route.” This means that people who read more will have many options later in life, so there will always be a “plan B”.
