Humans have taken everything out of the Earth. They took and took until the Earth had nothing else to give. Almost everything in the world was destroyed except for 10% of the human population and some bacteria and algae. Humans could no longer survive on Earth, so they had to find somewhere to survive. They created Eden, an artificial paradise where humans can live until Earth has healed. To keep from running out of materials like food, water, oxygen and space. They created strict population rules that each family was only available to have one child. Second children are banned and punishable by death. Without these rules they would run out of supplies and people would not be able to survive. All Rowan has ever wanted is to be like the other kids, to have friends. She wanted to have experiences and adventures of her own. After she learned that her family had found her a new home, where she would be able to be a first born, she snuck out as an act of rebellion. She had experiences of her own and went many new places, she went to this place called the rainforest cafe, where Ash’s friends hang out. Once she walked in she got nervous that someone would think she was Ash. When she tried to sneak out the back she met Ash’s best friend Lark. In Eden you get lens implants, so that people can see your identity. It makes their eyes turn grey, and second children’s eyes are all different colors. On her way to get her eye implants her car was stopped by police and she was forced out, so her mother gave her a backpack of necessities and told her to run no matter what. Rowan was in hiding for days until another second child named Lachlan found her. He told her he knew a place where many second children lived together and agreed to take her. When they got there she was put through torture, to make sure that if she was caught she would not tell them about where they live. When she was done she was given a tour of the Underground area where they lived. When she walked out of the room the first thing she saw was a giant camphor tree. This showed her that there was hope for the Earth to come back to life. She is in the underground for about two days before Lachlan comes to her door and tells her that she needs to come with
