Children of Divorce
Introduction:
Divorce is a process that does irreparable damage to all involved, but most especially to children. Over a million American children endure the divorce of their parents each year (Churchill & Fagan, 2012). Divorce may benefit some individuals in certain cases, but it causes an overall decrease in quality of life and impacts family relationships. Children of divorce sometimes have more trouble with dating, higher expectations of divorce later in life, and a decreased desire to bear children. Just a few generations ago, divorce was considered scandalous in America. With the changing times, divorce is now embraced by law, culture, and behavior, and is even celebrated sometimes.

Most parents have to adjust to their own intrinsic conflicts and to their new role as a divorced parent. Children of divorced families receive less financial assistance, emotional support, and practical help from their parents. Divorced homes show a decline in stimulation of academic behavior, pride, affection, language stimulation, encouragement of social maturity, and warmth directed towards the children. The strain and difficulties that arise when celebrating family traditions, performing daily rituals, and enjoying other special times are more pronounced in children of divorce, as they resent their parents and consider the changes as a major loss. The support that children receive at home is much lower in children of divorced parents rather than those of intact homes, and the negative ratings become more pronounced by the time children are in high school and college.
Effects of Divorce on Society Divorce consumes social and human capital. It substantially increases cost to the taxpayer, but also diminishes the taxpaying portion of society. Children’s future competence in all five of society’s major tasks or institutions (family, school, religion, marketplace, and government) are weakened by divorce. In these ways, divorce damages society.
