The first years of a child’s life are fundamentally important since they learn more quickly than at any other time in life. The experiences children have during this time stimulate the brain. So, these first years are the foundation that frames children’s growth, development and learning. All children have the right to an education and to an environment in which they are able to reach their full potential in life. Children at the age of five or six attend kindergarten, the first class that starts off the educational path in life. However, nowadays the earlier their education starts the better chance children have to succeed and meet the high standards set in place by our society. Therefore, the proportion of children participating in preschool has increased. Almost 66% of children nationally attend preschool each year according to the National Conference of State Legislatures (NCSL). “Preschool is generally understood to be school provided for children before they enter publicly funded kindergarten to grade twelve programs” (Brown, 2008, p.1). There are two categories of preschool: universal and targeted. “Universal preschool is a program that may be offered by a state, province, or country to provide access to preschool for all children of a particular age” (Brown, 2008 p.1). While targeted preschool programs “generally aim to provide services to particular groups of children considered at risk of school failure, due to poverty, limited English skills, or other issues”…
