While five might still seem like a copious amount to few the five have been proven to be effective in the past and today. The five are; HepB, DTap, IPV, MMR, and Varicella. Each vaccine prevents viruses that America has had a struggle with in the past. The vaccine with quite possibly the most history would be IPV which was invented by Jonas Salk and prevents Polio. In the early 1950’s much of America feared the Polio virus as it caused detrimental damage to the body and handicapped many children. A prime example of just how harmful the virus is would be none other than America’s 32nd president, Franklin D. Roosevelt. Roosevelt recalled being ill for a brief part of his childhood but never thought much of it until age 39 when he became affected by infantile paralysis caused by poliomyelitis. The paralysis left him handicapped and wheelchair bound as he was hardly able to walk, the few times he did walk was through the help of metal leg braces and crutches. (Berish) The aftermath of the virus affected about children at its peak and was declared an epidemic. Once the vaccine had became widely distributed polio was declared eradicated by 1979. (CDC) Since the eradication of the disease polio has become an extremely rare illness, so rare that not one case appeared in the U.S. in 2015. The …show more content…
The main one to be prevented would be Pertussis, pertussis mainly affects small children as they are more susceptible to the disease and become dangerously ill. What the disease does is affect the respiratory system and make it extremely hard to breathe. This can be especially lethal to babies and children under five. The vaccination for this illness is a great way to prevent the sickness as it is highly contagious. It’s important that this illness be aggressively contained since new mothers can very easily transfer this to their children. So not only should it be required for school but as a population as a whole to prevent the deaths of small children. The problem is that many think it is not necessary and has led to as many as 32,000 cases in the US in the year of 2014 alone. (CDC,
