Family Assessment
Family is a set of interacting individuals related by blood, marriage, cohabitation or adoption who independently performs relevant functions by fulfilling expected roles (Edelman & Mandle, 2010, p. 173). The student was instructed to perform a family assessment. She chooses the Isaacs family to do the assessment on. Annette is 47 years old. She is a nurse practitioner, she is 5ft 5inches and weighs 290lbs. Howard is 46 years old. He is an over the road tractor trailer driver. He is 6ft tall and weighs 220 lbs. Jermaine is 18 years old and he is a student.

All members of this family wear corrective lenses. Annette is very consciences about her family’s annual eye exams. The family functions as a unit with mom and dad making all the major decisions. Annette communicated her word carries more weight because she is the one at home. The family overall appears to be happy with one another they are close and financially stable. A. Isaacs (personal communication, March 27, 2012) stated” at times I feel like a single mother because Howard is gone so much working.” She also feels very isolated in her own community. The Isaacs family lives in a diverse community but it is not a lot of African Americans in the community. Her neighbors of the past 4 years do not speak when they see her.
Since the family has one young adult and soon to be a teenager they are very open and honest when talking to their children about safe sex and sexual relationships J. Isaacs (personal conversation, March 27, 2012) stated ” My father and especially my mother preach to me all the time about safe sex and condoms”. Jermaine has a girlfriend and is still a virgin at this time. Jermaine is very concerned his friends will tease him if they find out he is still a virgin. The student counseled Jermaine to be proud of the decision he made to stay a virgin. The student also reassured him their conversation will remain private.
This family for the most part communicates by talking to one another; however Howard is the disciplinarian of the family. H.
