"Childhood vaccines are one of the great triumphs of modern medicine. Indeed, parents whose children are vaccinated no longer have to worry about their child's death or disability from Whooping cough, Polio, Diphtheria, Hepatitis, or a host of other infections" (Ezekiel Emmanuel). Immunizations given throughout childhood have saved millions of lives. Vaccination rates in the U.S. are higher than ever while illnesses and death from Measles, Diphtheria, Tetanus and more are at an all-time low, near "record lows". Immunizations have also protected and saved many adults from serious illnesses like the Flu, Hepatitis and Pneumonia. There are many forms of vaccinations. For people with compromised immune systems, there are vaccines where the bacteria or virus is inactivated. An altoid is another component used which is when it is a modified version of a harmful toxin. Bacterial or viral components are used in the last component used in ingredients. This only involves harmful parts of the bacteria or virus that can cause a strong immune reaction. The component used in the vaccine teaches your body to fight the virus of the disease you’re being vaccinated against. Once your body learns to fight it, you are protected against it. Some vaccines are also combined to fight more than one disease at a time. For example, the MMR vaccine fights measles, mumps and rubella all at once. Another example would be the DTaP vaccine. This vaccine protects people from diphtheria, tetanus and pertussis. Some vaccines may have minimal side effects which, in reality, are not risky at all. Swelling is the most common side effect which is swelling occurrence at the site of injection.
