“I recently ended up in a long conversation with another mother at our children’s elementary school who told me about the ongoing conflict among the school’s board members about nutrition in the school. Apparently, the head of the committee wants all things sugar banned from the school — even lollipops for Valentine’s Day. My friend — smart board woman she is – realizes the absurdity of this goal and is trying to stop the other mother from making these unnecessary changes. “Childhood obesity cannot be resolved this way. It’s about what goes on outside school that matters,” she said.”
Using common sense has to come into play when it comes to childhood obesity. If someone is eating 5,000 calories a day they must burn those calories in order to maintain a healthy weight or more to lose a few pounds. Sixty minutes of play a day is a great start to slowing down the weight gain but that is not enough. Adding Physical Education back into schools where each student has the access to good equipment and properly trained teachers would start a great health movement. The programs like that of The Cooper Institute and United Way of Metropolitan Dallas have partnered up for to promote health in schools with the Healthy Zone School Recognition Program (HZSRP). The HZSRP gives schools resources to engage teachers, students, parents, and the broader community in a joint effort to improve the health of their communities. The HZSRP is open to all public, private, and charter schools in Dallas, Rockwall, Colin, and southern Denton counties. We are also excited to announce that the program is open to all schools in Arlington ISD (United Way)! However, there is a few other area that must be addressed and that is putting down the electronics, staying off the computer, putting down the cell phone, and relaxing a little as stress also contributes to weight gain. The one thing that everyone needs to do in the immortal words of Hans and Franz from Saturday Night Live “Pick things up and put them down!” Everyone needs to pick up a little more exercise and put down a lot of the electronics for a couple of hours a day. The world might just loose a little weight and learn to communicate with each other
