Childhood obesity is a serious medical problem. “Obesity now affects 1 in 6 children and adolescents in the United States” (Childhood Overweight and Obesity, 2015). Obesity occurs in children who are well above normal weight for their age and height. Childhood obesity effects multiple aspects of a child’s life including their mental and physical health problems. The mental health problems are associated with poor self-esteem in children; which can also cause depression. The physical health problems are high cholesterol, high blood pressure, diabetes, etc. Although theses health problems should be confined to mostly adults. “70 percent of obese youth had at least one risk factor for cardiovascular disease, such as high cholesterol or high blood pressure. Researchers predict that, if current adolescent obesity rates continue, there will be more than 100,000 additional cases of coronary heart disease attributable to obesity by the year 2035” (Hospital, 2014). Obesity in children end up effecting academic achievement in a negative way. All the physical health factors that comes with obesity causes absences from school. Missing a lot of school will eventually effect their grades. If they are not in the classroom to learn, it then becomes hard for them to do the work. The mental health factors contribute to this also. With the poor self-esteem and depression leads to a drop in the grades. The students become…
