Childhood Maltreatment

Childhood maltreatment is defined as to harm, neglect or mistreatment of children that may be physical, sexual or emotional in nature. Child maltreatment is not a new mysterious or unexplained circumstance. It’s been around way back in history as far as you can remember. There are a lot of factors to child maltreatment but the most commonly recognized now are physical abuse, sexual abuse, neglect and emotional maltreatment. Domestic Violence has become an issue that has serious impacts on a lot of families and children all around the world. Even though the child may not be the one part of the physical abuse there are many other factors that come along with witnessing violence at home. I believe that allowing your child to witness domestic violence is considered child maltreatment. Exposure to domestic violence during childhood can perpetrate violence, internalizing, and externalizing problems and can also increase the risk of post-traumatic stress disorder. Children suffer both emotionally and physically when they are brought up in abusive homes and ignoring this can be considered neglectful and irresponsible. Children who grow up in abusive homes may have higher rates of mental health problems and behavioral problems in their futures as well. Sometimes it is hard for a parent to leave an abusive home soley based off of fear. Some parents may feel as though they cannot escape and that if they were to try and leave their abuser will come after them. As a parent I also believe that you try your hardest to make things better and to always do your best. It could also be possible the parent/victim could feel responsible for the abuse therefore preventing them from leaving.
