Childhood Fear Analysis

Kendall talks about the childhood fears that almost everyone goes through. From when we are little, we all fear the monster that is under our bed or hiding in our closest, getting taken away from your parents or being left alone. At a point, most people start to have a stuffed animal or a "blankey" that they use as a comfort item because they get scared, sad, depressed, or get anxiety. Kendall states the reason for these childhood fears are that we fear of losing someone or something dear to us. During the adolescence stage, everyone has the fear of making mistakes or being humiliated by their peers. This fear is also the main cause to why most teenagers are self-conscious. Kendall mentions that psychologist David Elkind came up with the "imaginary …show more content…
Lastly there is the time when we all get into our elderly ages and the fact that our youth is behind us and now we appreciate the quiet small joys in life. Along with seniors citizens self-knowledge that allows them to state their opinions about everything/anything, come the fears of loss of independence, being helpless and physically weak, and the possibility being a burden on your family. With these fears in elderly peoples minds they become what Kendall calls "hermit-like" which is they stay in the comfort of their own home and they hardy get out and talk to other people. For elderly people, the key element to being in good health is being mentally and physically active. Based on my observations I truly feel that Kendall's thesis is correct because every person in the world has had or experienced any one of these fears from the time they are toddlers to a senior citizen. It is very common to have these fears throughout your life and sometimes certain fears stick with us as we mature. For instance, I still feel as if people judge and criticize me no matter what I am doing, I have had that fear since I was about 12 and I don't think I will grow out of

In the article “A Decade of Fear” Sam Robert explains how McCarthyism turned Americans against each other in the decade after World War II by creating fear on every single one of them, because they were either involved with Communism or knew someone who was. According to Robert “screenwriters, actors, directors, and producers were dragged before the House Un-American Activities Committee and asked to “name names” of colleagues who had Communist ties or sympathies” (par. 13). In other words, men and women were asked to expose friends and/or family who was associated with the practice of Communism. As a matter of fact, society did not really have a choice at that time, because the government was callous and did not care about their rebuttals.…

Susan Jacoby’s big argument is how Americans and baby boomers are blinding themselves from the true reality of old age. She says Americans do believe that, “we are going to get older, but not actually old”. The American culture sees being old as a good thing, as long as one doesn’t experience any typical health problems of people who are “old old”. This new ageism in America disapproves old age and that is stopping us from having a clear image of it. Jacoby says that old age has changed because some boomers believe they can stay “forever young” and that ninety may soon become the new fifty.…

The New York Times journalist, Sam Roberts, in the article, “A Decade of Fear” published in 2010 addresses the topic of the Red Scare and how it illustrates how McCarthyism turned Americans against each other after WWII due to threat posed by the Soviets and false accusations of the American government being infiltratred of communists. Some of the fears that were brought up by Norma, are similar to those that are being brought up by others members of the older generation; unresolved fears about aging, finances, and retirement. In order to calm those fears we need to be educated enough so we can provide awareness and provide resources to them. We also need to be able to understand the changes they go through as they experience the aging process and the shift into retirement. Norma says that even though she worries about what life will be like, she takes one day at a time because she knows that time flies by quickly. “When you are young you think you will never get to 18, then 25, and then 40, 50 etc.…
