Before working in childcare programs, my patience level was very low in my eyes. Some people would say that I was a very patient person, but that is only because their patience was much lower than mine. I would tell stories all the time, talk about how I was feeling, answer questions in the classroom, but I never took much time to listen to anyone else. Perhaps this can be considered selfish, but my friends enjoyed how much I enjoyed talking. I was always making other laugh. When I started working at a childcare program I realized that the children enjoyed being the ones to tell stories, answer questions, and just constantly talk. They would rather talk then listen. This was hard for me to adjust to because I wanted to tell the kids funny stories, but they got much more joy out of telling me their stories. I had to learn to sit back and listen. As a teacher it is important to show interest in the students lives. You want to make sure they know that you value them, their thoughts, comments, questions, and concerns. When you are able to do that you also create an environment that they feel safe and comfortable in. You create a space that shows you are.
The NAEYC Code of Ethical Conduct did not do much to my thoughts on the principles and ideals in a childcare program. In my eyes, everything in the code goes along with common sense. It is nice that there is a place that contains all the ethical principles and ideals that a teacher/program should have. I think this helps not only teachers and staff, but parents as well. If they know that a school is accredited by the NAEYC or uses the NAEYC code, then the parents can be assured of everything that they are being a part
