The real question, however, is how long does it take a person to learn a new language? Researchers Collier and Thomas give us the answer, “The shortest time frame we have found for groups to reach grade-level achievement in second language is 4-7 years but that applies only to students who have received quality, grade-level schooling through their two languages” (A National Study of School Effectiveness for Language Minority Studentsí Long-Term Academic Achievement p. 270). Indeed, it has been argued that “students who are retained are more likely to drop out of school compared to students who were never retained” (GreatSchoolStaff). This, however, can be fixed if a child receives more help like, tutoring, which is considered a great option for kids who need help catching up. As parents, it is best to be the ones who encourage our children to succeed, and if there is a situation where a teacher wants to hold them back we must not allow it. If we do not help our kids advance and reach their goals then who
