The NASW Standards for Social Work Practice in Child Welfare are the standards in which all child welfare social workers must abide by in practice (National Association of Social Workers, 2013). Standard one states that workers shall practice ethically by using the Code of Ethics to guide practice and self-regulate personal values and ethics when understanding practice. This standard will be essential in practice as if practice is unethical, the safety and wellbeing of children will be put in jeopardy. This standard’s practice contains a lot of grey area as in child welfare practice there are few scenarios that are black and white. A common ethical dilemma I have seen in my field placement is determining who the client is, the family or the…

Across the United States, child welfare systems and child welfare case workers serve some of the most vulnerable children, youths, and families. Child welfare case workers, classified more broadly as child, family, and school social workers, are individuals who can work for state or local government, as well as for schools, to help children gain access to healthier and happier lives. They work to support families and to protect children from harm through many prevention and intervention services; in particular, case workers work to support children who have been or are at risk of abuse or neglect. However, oftentimes the family the case worker is trying to help greets him or her with hostility and dislike, resulting in the family not willing…

They need to be able to either find a adopted home, be reunified with their parents or parent, or live in a stable home with a family member. Instead, children come into the foster care system in which they move from foster home to foster home, without loving parents or a permanent family. This week in the field I had the opportunity to observe a CFTM. The CFTM consisted of a Southern Christian Service (SCS) Family Specialist, the potential foster parents and the MYPAC team (facilitator, therapist and supervisor). This meeting was geared towards revealing the diagnosis of the foster child to the potential foster parents. I have very conflicting feelings about this CFTM, because I feel like we blindsided the foster parents. SCS has been working with this family for over 4 months and there is a great deal of work that goes into licensing a foster home.…

The Effects of Insufficient Funding of Child Protective Services How often is the reality of child protective services (CPS) revealed? Occasionally, a child abuse or neglect case will result in child fatality that draws attention from the press. The media then exploits said child abuse case and the case worker is usually blamed for the child’s outcome, no matter what their efforts were to help the child prior to his or her death. Despite a social worker’s best intentions, they are not always capable of properly caring for children in need. There’s no denying the rising issue of child abuse and domestic violence in the United States, for example, according to the Child Help Organization, “a report of child abuse is made every ten seconds” (“Child…

Nevertheless, child endangerment occurs when a person engages in conduct that places a child in imminent danger of death, bodily injury, or physical or mental impairment. I advocated for clients by educating employers about the unlimited potential of a person living with a developmental delay. I often found myself fighting against social injustices, such as discrimination and finding the dignity and worth of the client I was serving, despite his or her life challenges. After careful consideration, I decided to become properly trained in advocacy and started my academic career in the pursuit of a Social Work Degree. Now that I have obtained my bachelor’s degree in social work and became licensed in the state of Mississippi, I am prepared to go into a more specialized field of study. This is the reason I am pursuing my master degree in social work at Louisiana State University.…
