Child support is the financial support paid by parents to support a child or children of whom they do not have full custody. The custodial parent is the person who has primary care, custody and control of a minor child(ren). A custodian may also be a caretaker who has legal custody and/or guardianship of the child(ren). However, a noncustodial parent is the person who does not have primary care, custody or control of the child and has an obligation to pay child support. The Division of Child Support is divided into eight field offices and are located in Aberdeen, Sioux Falls, Rapid City, Huron, Mitchell, Watertown, Pierre, and Yankton (South Dakota Department of Social Services).
The policy we chose was codified law 25-7A-56, regarding South Dakota Child Support revokes or restricts driver’s licenses, and professional, business or recreational licenses if a non-custodial parent owes at least $1,000 in overdue support and hasn’t paid support in 3 months ( South Dakota Legislature).
