“Over the last ten years, two million children have been killed in conflict. Over one million have been orphaned, over six million have been seriously injured or permanently disabled and over ten million have been left with serious psychological trauma.” (“Children in Conflict: Child Soldiers” 1). Many reports by international human rights organizations have recorded ISIS using children in dangerous situations like being used as a human shields, guerrilla warfare, suicide missions, and execution. The main Sunni military group in Iraq, called the ISIS, are brainwashing children, and training them to fight their enemy, the Shiites. Kids as young as fifteen are put into the front lines. Child soldiers are being trained to use AK47s, automatic assault rifles, and tactical skills. According to CNN, “Child soldiers are treated no different than adult soldiers.” (“How ISIS recruits children, then kills them” 1). According to Scott Gates and Simon Reich, author and publisher of the Foreign Policy website, “Child soldiers are cheap and efficient weapons in war. Accounts from the field tell of soldiers who are near free to recruit, cheap to feed, and quick to follow orders” (1). This states that child soldiers are more efficient and easier to deal with than adult soldiers, and this is important when it comes to war. They also learn simply, when they are being taught to deadly missions. In fact, child soldiers take down targets easier than adults. “They’re small enough to transport easily in large numbers, yet big enough to handle modern lightweight arms, and heavy enough also to set off land mines so adults can safely follow. They have no real sense of fear and, when indoctrinated young enough, their capacity for loyalty and for barbarism exceeds that of adults” (Bethune 1).
