School age children will often compensate for feeling helpless after the abuse by blaming themselves for what had happened. A child does this to give themselves a sense of power and make up for the lack of control they have over the abuse. Further, the lack of control they have over the situation may make them feel as if they don’t have control over their future and cause them to act recklessly. In addition, many children experience many changes in their school and social life. It is very common for a child's school performance to significantly drop and have a difficult time concentrating. In return, they face many obstacles when filing a case for sexual abuse and in many cases their complainant is not reported. In the case that their complainant does get reported, it is very common for them to have to face many obstacles as shown by an eighteen year old girl whose name is unknown, and in the end the young men who assaulted her were never charged. In addition, although the punishments are reasonable they do not support the victims mental health.
