While majority of toys are safe, some can pose serious risk for children. Regrettably, a majority of recalled products are in response to child related incidents; for instance, in 2014 an estimated 251,800 toy-related injuries were treated in emergency rooms nationwide-- 73% to children younger than 15 years of age while 34% were children younger than 5 years of age United States Consumer Product Safety Commission, 2015). Although recalls are a preventative measure in helping to prevent further harm or injury from a defective product, manufacturers and sellers of the product can still be held liable for negligence if that product injures a consumer.
