In chapter ten we learn about a couple of child rearing styles of interaction which are authoritative, authoritarian, permissive, and uninvolved. Authoritative is describe as being warm, responsive, attentive, and sensitive to the child’s needs (pg 399). Authoritarian is someone that is cold and who frequently degrades a child (pg 399). Permissive is someone who is warm but overindulgent or inattentive (pg 399). Uninvolved is someone who is emotionally detached and withdrawn. The teachers at Head Start display authoritative child rearing in the classroom. They didn’t display authoritarian or uninvolved child rearing during my time there. There are many benefits by interacting in an authoritative manner than by responding in an authoritarian manner. From the book we can say that authoritative is more about showing compassion and having limits at the same time. Authoritative parents show all the support and affection a child needs. Also authoritative parents like to set standards and expect good behaviors from them. Children raise in an authoritative matter show that they have self-control, high self-esteem, social and moral maturity, and favorable school performance. In overall they grow up in a more safe, loveable, and understating environment. While authoritarian parents tend to manipulate children’s verbal expression, individuality, and attachments to parents. They put down their kids ideas, decisions, and show disapproval of the type of friends they have. Authoritarian parents set very high of expectations that they are not ready for. They have psychological control over the child’s life. This could have negative effects such has adjustment problems, anxiety, aggression, and defiance. Also they can develop mental problems if the parents continue to have psychological control.
