A large one we had was that on a fairly touchy topic, abortion. Most Catholics are highly against abortion and birth control. There will always be defiance when a law is passed allowing such things. Recently, a law was passed saying that a Catholic affiliated non-profit must offer birth control and abortion-inducing drugs in their third-party insurance company policy. The Catholic priest refuses to follow this mandate (Priests for Life). Atheist have no religious reason to be against birth control or even abortion. Most are for the “pro choice” argument. Every Atheist I have come into contact with has been this way. This conflict caused by opposing viewpoints comes as an over sized ball of tension. They disagree on many major points. Though they may be able to have a friendship most could never have a romantic relationship. The differences rarely come to a compromise and even if they do the tension would eat away at the main foundation of the relationship. Both religions could learn a lot from each other of course. Even if the relationship is likely to fail it is not wasted time. The Atheist can learn the love for others and closeness of community. The Catholic could learn that not everything is black and white or that their religion is not the only correct religion. Both can learn patience and understanding of others.
