“Well my mother did it for my father!” I could hear the tension in his usually seductive voice. Tears began to gather in my eyes as I looked out the window. I had wanted to scream, or cry, or not talk at all. However, in reality I did not know what I had wanted. I knew what he wanted. He made that extremely clear. He was my first real boyfriend and I would have done almost anything to please him, but this was too far. Granted I am stubborn in my ways, but for good reason! I should not have to do what I do not believe in. “Britt, I want you to because I love you” his voice was quiet then, almost sweet, it had this hook in it. Like something was was buried under the surface, something sharp that I was unable to see. I was not sure so I looked …show more content…
A large one we had was that on a fairly touchy topic, abortion. Most Catholics are highly against abortion and birth control. There will always be defiance when a law is passed allowing such things. Recently, a law was passed saying that a Catholic affiliated non-profit must offer birth control and abortion-inducing drugs in their third-party insurance company policy. The Catholic priest refuses to follow this mandate (Priests for Life). Atheist have no religious reason to be against birth control or even abortion. Most are for the “pro choice” argument. Every Atheist I have come into contact with has been this way. This conflict caused by opposing viewpoints comes as an over sized ball of tension. It taints the good times with a flash of a fake smile. It is a hot topic and one that many refuse to compromise …show more content…
They disagree on many major points. Though they may be able to have a friendship most could never have a romantic relationship. The differences rarely come to a compromise and even if they do the tension would eat away at the main foundation of the relationship. Both religions could learn a lot from each other of course. Even if the relationship is likely to fail it is not wasted time. The Atheist can learn the love for others and closeness of community. The Catholic could learn that not everything is black and white or that their religion is not the only correct religion. Both can learn patience and understanding of others. Though the can learn doesn’t mean they will of course. I learned that compromising my beliefs for another will not resolve anything, but instead create tension. Compromising is not always the

Before starting this project I came across an article from Huffington Post called Beyond the Conservative/Liberal Catholic Divide, written by Matthew N. Schmalz. My first time reading this article I thought that Schmalz was just writing about the different stereotypes in the catholic religion and that it is possible to be a liberal catholic, which originally sparked my interest. As a liberal I never knew that we could even participate in the Catholic Church, due to my views on Gay Marriage and abortion. Little did I know that there was so much more than just another thing that liberals and conservatives con not come to similar terms on from a local Catholic Church. As a community Saint Thomas Aquinas University Parish practices forgiveness and acceptance for some more than others.…

1.It is easier to define the turning points for Catholicism in the twentieth century than for evangelical and independent Protestants because they are easier defined and well-rounded. Catholicism is involved in a variety of cultures, diverse, and the most connected. Catholicism is the largest and the oldest of the religions in the world today. Evangelical and independent Protestants were not well-organized, and not as widespread as Catholicism was. It was easy for Catholics to get the word out and have turning points because people better knew it.…

As Julie said in her speech, abortions only cover about three percent the services Planned Parenthood provides. The organization understands and respects each individual’s right to make informed, independent decisions about health, sex, and family planning. Their health centers provide a broad spectrum of safe, reliable health care. Planned Parenthood is proud of its vital role in providing young people with honest sexuality and relationship information in classrooms and online to help reduce our nation’s alarmingly high rates of teen pregnancies and sexually transmitted infections. The United States has the highest teen pregnancy rate among the world’s developed nations and approximately 750,000 teenagers in the United States will become pregnant this year.…

Perhaps the reason behind the shift from positive to negative interactions that I experienced by both the Catholic community and my family proceeding my choice to follow a non-religious pathway, is because I posed a threat to their existing belief and social structure. When I attended St. Joseph’s Catholic Elementary School or unwillingly participated in church events, the normal behaviour was to blindly follow and absorb the religious knowledge that authority figures were providing. I however deviated from these norms and when given opportunities to share ideas during class, I would raise questions on the inconsistency, or contradictions present within the Catholic religion. This non-conforming response was found threatening to my parents and…

Every culture has different beliefs. A few weeks ago, I went to a Catholic church for my cultural plunge project. It was a new experience for me because it was my first time going to a church. According to what I have learned from the textbooks, Christianity and Catholicism carry some elements in common, such as the similarities in the worship of Christ and the practices of prayer as well as bible reading. For that reason, it is difficult to distinguish the differences between the two.…

In an outdoor amphitheater, somewhere in the mountains of California, I sat, in between hundreds of kids in staggered rows. I was looking at a man, strutting back and forth in front of a campfire, as if he were a general planning for a conquest. Every word that came out of this man’s mouth was a blur but his voice was unforgettable. Like an auctioneer yelling into the microphone, he zealously talked about Jesus and salvation. The man commanded us to ask for forgiveness and appreciate what God has done for us.…

In today’s societies around the world, there is currently two factions of the highly controversial topic of abortion and whether it should be allowed or outlawed. These two factions on opposite sides are pro-choice and pro-life. Pro-choice supporters in essence believes a woman has the right to an abortion if she decides to do so. On the other hand, pro-life supporters believe the fetus is its own human being and has the right to live, thus an abortion cannot be performed on the woman. Judith Jarvis Thomson, a philosophy professor supports the right to an abortion in her paper, “A defense of Abortion” (186).…

According to Archbishop Collins, the four main contributions religion makes to society are that religion enhances communities and allows human relationships to strive, local religious communities make large contributions to the common good of all people through charity work, religions shed light on modern issues through their knowledge, wisdom and heritage and finally religions grace society with beauty.
