There are different types of assessments that are done with observations that can help reach assessment goals. One is Performance Assessment is assessing students as they participate in daily activities, write stories, solve problems, and draw illustrations. Teachers observe and take brief notes on student discussions and interactions. Teachers review student work, determine strengths and weaknesses, and keep track of progress over time. Through observation, a teacher can plan and implement a program relevant to the child. By noticing what a child can/cannot do, by seeing where a child's interests are and planning learning experiences around that. Before I began observing the child I wanted to choose a few categories of theories I would look out for. I chose Howard Gardner and his multiple intelligence theories, or Laurence Kohlberg and moral development theory to look for. The child I was observing had just turned two so with moral development theory I knew I could really only look to see if he had reached level one: preconventional morality. As I was observing the child, he was playing outside with his toys. I noticed he wouldn’t sit and play with his cars, he would get up and move one car to the other side of the grass and come back and play from different angles.…

My child observation and classroom observation took place at the Mt. San Jacinto Child Development and Education center in the preschool/pre-k (ages 36 months to 54 months) program room. This classroom has 2 teachers and 15 children in attendance during my observation. My study child is a male student age 4 who for this assignment I will refer to as C. The classroom environment as a whole can handle the children within the program, however I will provide a better picture of the entire room to have a clear picture for reflection. As a child walking into this classroom you feel a sense of warmth of both the environment and also from the teacher as she greats all her children individually.…

In order to enhance the learning of the children’s play and learning, observation is a starting point in learning about children itself, in term of what they know and what they are able to do (Morrison, 2011). Through the observation process, the teachers are able to collect the information about the children in unobtrusive ways which capture the child in their natural state of learning rather than through prescribed tests (Envy & Walters, 2013). Additionally, effective teachers observe and listen carefully to each child, assesses the learning and emotional needs of the individuals and tries hard to provide appropriate tasks and activities (Hayes, 2009). For instance, as the child is playing spontaneously, the teacher observes the behaviour,…

For my infant, toddler, and preschool observations, I spent my hours at the CCC Childcare Center located in our college while for my kindergarten, 1st grade, 2nd grade observations, I spent my time at Casey Park Elementary School. During my observations at the CCC Childcare Center, I learned plenty about the methods and practices that go into early education before primary grades.
