The timid kids approached the buffalo, holding out their hand with a piece of lettuce. One by one they stuck their hand through the fence and the large, hairy, and slow buffalo reached its head towards the food. The kids nervously closed their eyes and waited until the lettuce was taken from their hand and then opened their eyes with a sigh of relief.
Over the summer I worked at the Woodlynde camp and one of the field trips was the zoo. It was my second year working at the camp, and for me being in charge of other kids wasn't that bad but I did have to always stay alert. I worked from 10:30 am to 3 pm, and I was assigned to be a junior counselor for the 4th graders. I was nervous that I would loose a camper or they wouldn't have fun but I had Ms. Szmajda as the head counselor and Kira Masalaitis as the other junior counselor in the group to ensure that the kids had a fun filled summer. My friends who were working with me were Wyatt, Ben, Robby, Brandon, Braden, Efrem, Taj, Ethan, and more. In the group there were about 12 kids. Every kid was funny in their own way but

Hegarty, Norma Rizzo, and Claire. They also had sports 1 and 2 with Mr. Frankel, Mr. Sweeney, Kyle McCaughey, Brandon Holdan, Efrem Leventhal, and Charlie. Theater was with Mr. Kupersmith, Taj, and Ethan. They also had videogames with Mr. Hanson, and Liam. Science was with Ms. VDA and Ms. Z. Their favorite activity was swimming which was Tuesdays, and Thursdays which was at a local residential club, and the kids had about 2 hours there. Each Friday they had a field trip. The field trips included the Zoo, a water park, Get Air, and the Legoland Discovery Center. Overall the camp lasted a month. Each day was different and eventful, especially with the 4th graders - from the fighting, to the rough housing, to the arguing, and not wanting to participate in an event. For the four weeks I worked I enjoyed it very much and can’t wait for the next

Using the stimulation of My Virtual Child I could find out how my parental style started and grew as I found out more about the child as he aged through the program. It made me think about my parental sensitivity, and how it changed drastically in the first two years of the child’s life. If I were to describe it at the beginning, it was difficult because all I seemed to do was be around the child and coddle him at any chance that I got. I gave him most if not all my attention. This got to a point around the 5-month mark where he started to prefer me over my partner.…

Most of the kids by the first five minutes of this observational period finished and cleaned up their table. Seeing such a drastic that seems to come from about 4 to 6 is amazing, unlike the preschoolers and toddlers the middle childhood kids have begun to take on more responsibility for their actions and are actually able to contribute to the world around them. For example, one of the kids needed a napkin, and rather than just asking a caregiver to get it, they got up and retrieved the napkin. Understandably, this is nothing special and in all honesty I may be finding such meaningless task a bit too exciting, but simply put, the change that can be noticed each age group and with such a large change from the preschoolers observed before it is just amazing to think about how much…

Though this assignment was a challenge for me, it was interesting that the two babies that I was provided with to observe were so different from the start of conception. What I mean by this is due to environment and heredity, as the location in which Owen would be developing in would be safe and secure as Michelle’s family are Christian based, and Michelle is highly involved within her church. I can see from the way she interacts with her children, that she is firm yet also very loving. Unfortunately, I cannot say the same thing for Christopher (especially if he ended up staying with his birth mother and father) as he was exposed to drugs at an extremely early age. I am not sure if the mother started using Meth from the very start, or if she started…

At the end of our last observation we watched a parent interview. During this observation we picked back up on this interview with the parent about her three year old boy. One of the first questions picking back up on this interview was the boy’s diet. The first question asked if his reflux made him have a limited diet. However, the mom emphasized that he is particular about how the food is arranged, but he’s not particular about what kind of food is on his plate.…

I completed my infant observation at the University Child Development Center. The University Child Development Center specializes in childcare for infants all the way up to children age 12. The infant I observed was about eight months of age and was placed in a classroom that usually has a relatively small number of infants for better one on one attention. As I completed my observation, I observed all five developmental domains which include physical, emotional and social, cognitive, adaptive, and language and communication.…
