Child Observation Project

For my child observation project, wanted to observe my cousin who is three years old. She has recently migrated here in San Jose, California. Her name is June(This is not her real name). June was born and raised in Eritrea (The country resides in Africa(west from the red sea)). Since she has recently migrated here to America she does not have a lot of friends unless if it is through family members who are around the age of 6-12 years old. Her first language is not English, but Tigrinya (the language that Eritreans speaks); as a result, she does not talk much. She was raised by a single parent ,her mother, the father finally gets to meet the daughter through video chat and now he has directly raised the child with the mother. In Eritrea it is common that most children are raised in an …show more content…
With that it shows that there is a possibility that June's mother was very responsive and had a warm relationship with her daughter. What I plan to find out in my observation is to identify her personality, cognitive and social development when I am with her during my family reunion and my time are the restaurant/ time at the park. In her early childhood I believe she was able to go through two of Erikson’s eight stages/crises of personality development. She was able to go through the first stage/ crises which is Trust Versus Mistrust through her mother’s warm and responsive parental care that she has given her. This was noticeable because she was able to sit down with my parents who are considered total strangers to my observee and she was able to behave herself and not be distressed when her mother left her either of my parents. June also shows signs of Erikson’s second stage/ crises also known as Autonomy Versus Shame and doubt. I noticed this through my observation that she showed self-care characteristics. For example, she is potty trained and she knows when she needs to use the restroom

Introduction The child I have chosen for this observation, Sally, is a girl of seven years old. She is bright and energetic with a very curious mind and a head-strong personality. There are a few facts, however, that prevent a typical analysis. She is currently a foster child in our home who is separated from her two siblings through circumstances that she was told were her fault. Although the fact that it is all her fault is not true, it is what she believes and remains the filter through which she looks at everything else in her life.…

In the Pre-K classroom that I observed it consisted of several different centers for the children to participate in, such as: block area, dramatic play, art, library, sand/water table, music/movement, sensory area, finger painting, play dough, and the students got the opportunity to make their own snacks. Not only did the students get to participate in centers, they had the opportunity each day to go outside and play on the playground as well as having an interactive lecture every morning at circle time and when the students sat down at their tables to do their daily worksheet. I believe that the Pre-K class I observed was a mix between traditional teaching as well as constructivism, creating a balance between the two. In the morning during circle time, the teacher would “lecture” the students with the letter of the day, go over the date, months, days of the week, shapes, and the numbers up to the date it currently was.…

The first socialization process begins with the family unit where the newborn develops with the help of a primary caregiver. It is in the family unit where the child starts to interact and develop social skills with the members of the family. The next major experience a child receives in his or her socialization journey is the influence they receive from their peers. Peers in this context refers to anyone outside the family unit that a child comes in contact with but that has same age status or be close to the age range where they decide whether the child is too old or too young to be part of that group. The contact can range from anyone in the local environment such as children in the community that have about the same age status.…
