The adolescent I am observing is a female of the age of 16. She comes from a Ethiopian and Yemeni background but was raised in the United States. Some of her features of include long dark brown hair, large brown eyes and long fingernails painted with matte grey nail polish. This adolescent is a junior in high school at a school that she just recently started to attend. I am observing her at a local coffee shop name Dean and Deluca. We make our way out the door and she notices a group of boys standing near the fountain, she pulls her shoulders back, tucks her hair behind and walks past them with her chest leading the way. Once we get to the fountain she flips her hair looks at the boys and waves to one of them, as she turns back to face us she smiles to herself as her cheeks turn red. She hands her sister her phone and then sits on the ledge of the fountain, she fixes her hair to one side, crosses her legs (right leg on top of the left leg) and smiles wide. Her eyes get smaller as her smiles deepen and her hands are holding on to the ledge. She asks to see the photo and say “take another one, I look stupid ”. She then runs her hands through hair total of five three times, brings out her shirt that was tucked into her leggings and once again crosses her legs (right leg on top of the left leg). After she realizes the photo has been taken she proceeds to climb on top on the ledge of the fountain with caution. She props her right hand on her right hip as her left hand sits on her left though and smiles a soft smile that doesn’t make her face scrunch up. She then hops off and snatches the phone out her sisters hands and observes her photo. She raises her eyebrows as she grips her phone tightly then looks up with bright eyes and says “Damn, I look good”. She laughs at herself at leads the way back to the coffee shop with a smile on face and bright red

At that age, personal appearance and what people think of you are very important aspects for a child’s self esteem, confidence level, and image that they have of themselves. Connie, like many teenagers, lives a double life- meaning she has two different personalities; “Everything about her had two sides to it, one for home and one for anywhere that was not home” (1). At home she would act in a childish manner but when she would be in public with friends she would act more maturely. Even her laugh was slightly different “which was cynical and drawling at home- “Ha, ha, very funny,” –but high pitched and nervous anywhere else, like the jingling of the charms on her bracelet” (1).…

The parent involvement surveys consisted on 10 questions related to parent involvement including meetings, communications with classroom teachers, involvement in parent groups, volunteering, instructional and school policy, and being informed about their child’s education progress. The survey results were somewhat surprising as the parent involvement levels in the district were substantially lower in volunteering, involvement, visibility, and engagement of educational activities outside the home than was first predicted. Survey results regarding visibility indicated that 53% of parents in grades 6th-12th either never met with their child’s teacher or did so less than twice per year. Survey results of parents visiting their child’s school were…
