Child abuse and neglect is common in the United States. Over 680,000 children are abused and 1,500 die. Laws that are made to protect children from abuse and neglect some are not being enforced properly and the federal government they say is to blame. The Children's Advocacy Institute form university of San Diego states that children are suffering. Federal officials say that they're encouraged the number of abused children is lower than 2012. But children's advocates say abuse is so often not reported which makes it near impossible to know if it has gone down. "This is just something that's chronically underreported" says Elisa Weichel, a staff attorney with the children's advocacy institute. She said most neglet and abuse cases are not closed
